COMMISSIONS: HOW THEY WORK
A commission is a fun and collaborative process that brings special meaning to your painting.
However, before we begin, we need to make sure I am a good fit for your vision.
SUBJECT:
First we meet to discuss the subject matter and mood of the piece and ensure it lines up with my style of work.
* I am a Wildlife and Landscape painter. My paintings emphasize Contrast, Tone, and Light and I do not deviate from that subject matter.
I do not do portraits of people or pets or anything else outside of my standard subject matter. (While you may have seen some of these in my portfolio, I no longer provide this option in my work)
CONCEPTS:
We determine the dimensions of the piece you are looking for.
I provide ideas via digital sketches and mockups.
You choose the idea that best suits your vision
I allow a reasonable number of adjustments to this concept to fine tune the piece.
Finally I provide you with a completed digital mockup so that you are 100% comfortable with the piece that I will be painting for you.
NOTE: This portion of the process can take a large amount of my time and while I do not take a deposit until after this phase is complete, I kindly ask that you do not enter this stage of the project unless you plan on moving forward with a painting.
DEPOSIT:
A 50% deposit is taken and the canvas, paints and other supplies are ordered.
PAINTING BEGINS:
After starting, I provide you with updates and photos of your work in progress.
TIMING
Every painting has its own rhythm. Some come together quickly, while others require more exploration—revisiting techniques, repainting certain areas, or even setting the canvas aside briefly until the right solution appears.
On top of the creative process, I also balance commissions with shows, exhibitions, and other professional commitments. These can occasionally pause or stretch timelines.
For these reasons, I don’t promise exact completion dates. Instead, I’ll give you a target window and keep you updated along the way so you always know where things stand. My priority is the quality of the finished piece, not rushing it at the expense of the result.
DELIVERY:
Once complete, I will deliver and help hang your painting at no additional cost. (Based on location)
If you are outside the local area, shipping prices will be provided.
WHEN VISIONS DON'T ALIGN
Occasionally, it becomes clear that my vision of the painting isn't coming together. If that happens, I believe it’s more professional to be upfront rather than press on with a painting that doesn’t feel right for either of us.
In these cases, I will refund your deposit in full. This way, you’re not paying for something you won’t love, and I’m not delivering a piece that falls short of my standards.
The only time a deposit is non-refundable is if you choose to cancel after I’ve already started painting or purchased materials—at that point, the deposit covers the work and costs already committed.
COMMISSIONS
I try to be very up front and transparant with my pricing.
An original oil painting in my style is a very complex process.
Paintings take anywhere from 150 - 300 hours to complete and are priced accordingly.
